Ivan Andreyevich Krylov was born on February 13, 1769 into the family of an officer and spent his childhood years in the Urals and in Tver. The head of the family died early — in 1778 — having left a widow with two children to take care of. The family was constantly in need, and Krylov started working when a teenager yet. In 1782 he moved to Petersburg with his mother. He was systematically engaged in self-education: studied literature, Italian and French languages, and mathematics. Soon he took a post in the Petersburg state chamber. Read more

«My days have been a dream» (205th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe)

On January 19, 1809, Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe's father and mother, both professional actors, died before the poet was three and John and Frances Allan raised him as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia. John Allan, a prosperous tobacco exporter, sent Poe to the best boarding schools and later to the University of Virginia, where Poe excelled academically. Read more

Aitmatov, the most celebrated representative of Kyrgyzstan , was born into the family of Torekul and Nagima Aitmatov in the village of Sheker (Talas Valley, at the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains, near the Chinese border in Kyrgyzstan). Chingiz Aitmatov's grandmother was his closest friend; she toght him about Kyrgyz culture, taking the boy to traditional field festivities, weddings, meetings with storytellers, bards, and akyn singers.
